Silver find Background Brough under Stainmore
In March 1713, Jane Alderson of Stainmore reported that she had found 118 oz of silver in a wall belonging to the lord of the manor of Brough. Melted down, the treasure was worth £28 2s 9s - almost £3,000 today. A further 20 oz was recovered when wall's owner sold the findings to a Scotch pedlar. Honest Jane was given £5 reward plus a pension of £1 p.a. for life.
